6 Nov 2005: vs. FC Abbey Meads

Wickham’s visit to F C Abbey Meads saw initially driving rain but this did die away in the first half. The main problem was the very strong cross wind. Without Jordan Shaw, Jordan Burnett dropped into defence.

On a wet, windy morning, Wickham visited FC Abbey Meads at Supermarine. With the wind blowing strongly across the pitch both sides struggled to use the full width of the pitch. Abbey Meads made the better start with the first 5 minutes spent in the visitor’s half but with 10 minute gone Wickham had got themselves back into the game. The first save of the game was made by the home keeper after 17 minutes had gone as Wickham pushed forwards. With 3 minutes of the half to go, Wickham had a free kick on the half way line which Jordan Burnett quickly took to Karl Admans. He raced into the area before being brought down from behind. William Herrington duly tucked the penalty away into the corner of the net. Bang on half time, Wickham had another shout for a penalty but this was correctly waived away as accidental hand ball.

Ian and John asked the lads to keep things tight at the back and not to concede an early goal. It was Wickham however who went out and scored in the 2nd minute of the half. An Abbey Meads throw in was won by Jordan whose header found Karl. He passed the ball up the line to Charlie and after going past his man, centred the ball to where William and Josh were waiting. William got to the ball first and despite pressure from defenders slotted the ball inside the near post. Both sides continued to create chances and William was denied his hat trick by a great save from the keeper. Ben had to keep alert but never really had a shot to save but did deal well with some tricky corners. Jack Moore and Jordan Burnett did brilliantly in defence with all the lads battling well to the end of the game. Thus Wickham extended their unbeaten league run to 6 matches and now go to Shaw next week in the cup.

The Player of the Day Award for a fine defensive display, and in his own words “for never leaving his own half” went to Jack Moore.
