4th Dec 2005: vs. Highworth Juniors "A"

Wickham and Highworth A, the two 100% records sides in the North Wilts League, faced each other at “The Triangle Field”. With Highworth only having 7 players and Wickham a full squad, although Ben was carrying an injury, it was hoped that Highworth would tire late in the match which Wickham could take advantage off.

Wickham kicked off but their initial attack was snuffed out as Highworth put the pressure on the home side. However after 4 minutes a Wickham attack saw the ball come out to Olly on the left hand side. From about 15 yards out he tired to curl the ball in the far corner but it just went beyond the post for a goal kick. Both sides continued to attack at every opportunity and you could see why both sides had, so far, an unbeaten record. Jordan Shaw and Jack were solid at the back with William and Karl chasing everything down in midfield but Jordan Burnett was not getting a look in up front. Charlie and Josh came on to replace Olly and Jordan B after 17 minutes but the Highworth defence remained strong. William had a goal bound shot deflected wide for a corner, but from this Highworth broke away. Jack initially held the forward up but when the pass was made it was a one on one with Ben. As Ben came out he found that he could not reach the shot but fortunately it hit the outside of the post.

The second half started with the same seven on the pitch, with instructions to pass the ball around and create space. Initially this is what happened and Highworth had to endure some sustained pressure. So much so that in the 7th minute Wickham had three corners on the trot, with the last one some how scrambled away off the line, when a goal seemed certain. From this clearance Highworth broke but Ben made the necessary save. Five minutes later a free kick was given away midway in the Wickham half which Ben turned away for a corner. Three minutes later however Highworth were in front. With the visitors only sending 3 players up for the corner, the ball was some how flicked in at the near post by Conner Simpson. With 10 minutes left Wickham removed Jack Moore from defence and put Jordan Burnett up front but neither Jordon nor Charlie could get hold of the ball. With 5 minutes left William could only hit a free kick into the wall. Highworth held on using up as much time as they could when they were in position and thus retaining their 100% record for the season.

Player of the Day went to Ben for two great saves which kept Wickham in the match.
