1st Apr 2006: vs. Highworth C

The final game of the League season was at Home to Highworth C and due to Highworth's fixture back log was played on a Saturday morning. Jack Moore was missing and with Jordan Shaw away on holiday Wickham were without the defensive pairing which started the season.

Jordan Burnett stepped in to partner Jack Bolton at the back, with Jack taking the captain's arm band. Despite Highworth kicking off it was Wickham who had the initial pressure. A shot from William was well saved by the keeper and then almost straight from the clearance Karl had a chance which he dragged just wide. Despite having the wind, Highworth were finding it difficult to get out of their half as the goal kicks were usually picked off by the Wickham midfield players. In the 5th minute Jordan broke up a Highworth attack and found William in the middle of the park. He in term laid the ball forwards into Olly's path who just managed to get to the ball before the out rushing keeper and duly poked the ball away for 1-0. The game evened out a little now but Jack and Jordan were dealing with most things which came their way. An attacking throw in from Jordan in the 15th minute was flicked across the goal by Karl. The keeper missed it which enabled Josh to pull the ball back across an empty goal but the defender just got to the ball before Olly. The resulting corner was punched clear to William on the edge of the box, who hit a first time volley that went just past the post. Charlie replaced Olly and almost immediately increased the lead but his shot went just past the post. William then had a chance which was well save by the keeper who then needed attention having been winded by making the save. With half time fast approaching a goal kick was headed back up the field by William straight into Charlie's path. He held off the defender and neatly tucked the ball away as the keeper came out for a half time lead of 2-0.

Aiden was on for Karl at the start of the second half as Wickham pushed forwards looking for the decisive third goal to make the game safe. In the first minute Josh forced his was through the middle. The keeper made a great save but Aiden following in could only fire the ball across the goal from a tight angle. The 4th minute saw a throw in from Jordan eventually come to William in the middle who threaded the ball through to Josh but his shot went just wide. The resulting goal kick was intercepted by William and his long range shot just went past the left hand post. Three minutes later a clearance from Jack again found William in the middle. He sent Charlie clear who hit a rasping shot which the keeper did well to turn wide of the post. Olly now came on to replace Josh, and Karl for Aiden as Wickham continued to press forwards. Finally they were able to increase the lead in the 13th minute from a great passing move. A goal kick from Ben came out to Karl on the right. He knocked the ball inside to William who immediately switched the ball to Olly on the left. Olly knocked the ball back inside to William who gave it back to Olly who was bearing down on goal. As the keeper came out he hit a drive which just clipped the inside of the near post and flashed into the back of the net. Charlie then had a chance out on the right hand side but his shot came back off the crossbar. Jordan and Charlie were replaced for the last 5 minutes with Olly dropping back into defence and only another great save from the keeper stopped Josh from adding to the score line. However, Wickham ended the scheduled League season with a 3-0 win only having conceded 1 goal from the 10 league matches in 2006. They now must wait as Highworth A play their remaining 6 matches to see if a play-off game is necessary or if Wickham will be crowned Champions.

For a great display in defence where very little if anything got past him, Jack Bolton was awarded the Player of the Day Trophy.
