Wickham’s visit to Shaw in the 2nd round of the cup was always going to be a hard match, with Shaw probably the best team in division 1. Without Jordan Shaw the defence was reshuffled with Jordan Burnett again stepping in and four players put into the midfield.
After 2 minutes of Shaw pressure Wickham had a break which saw Olly race clear. With Olly bearing down on goal the keeper came diving out feet first taking Olly out but play was waived on. 2 minutes later William seemed to have got around his player in the box only to be block out by the defender with again play being waived on. This then set the tone of Shaw’s play for the majority of the first half. After 7 minutes a clearance from Jordan set Josh free on the left. He continued his run and crashed the ball into the back of the net. However straight from the centre Shaw went down their left, crossed the ball into the middle for an easy tap in equaliser. With 15 minutes gone Shaw repeated the move which again resulted in a tap in goal as Wickham failed to pick up the runners. At the centre William asked to ref if the Shaw players were 5 yards away only to receive a lecture in return from the ref. Olly was then pushed up front but right at the end of the half Wickham conceded a free kick near the apex of the box. Despite a two man wall the ball was played into the box and neatly flicked in at the near post for a Shaw 3-1 lead at half time.
Wickham reshaped themselves for the second half with Karl coming off Jordan moving up front and Aiden coming on at the back. Within 2 minutes a goal had been pulled back. A clearance by Aiden found William who switched the ball immediately to Olly. He then drew the keeper before laying the ball off to Jordan who crashed it into the net. From the centre Ben produced a cracking save from Shaw’s Swindon star Mason Thompson. 5 minutes into the half following another great save by Ben the resulting corner was hit into the box by Matt Jones which Ben could only palm into the net. Wickham pushed forwards to try to get back into the game but with 10 minutes left two Shaw players were left free at the back post despite Ben’s calls and he could do nothing about stopping the shot. Jack Bolton and Charlie came on and Wickham still pressed forwards. With 4 minutes remaining William took a throw which Charlie headed on to Josh who duly scored. This set up an attacking end but with Shaw continuing to use their forceful robust tactics Wickham never really had another clear cut chance as the home side ran out 5-3 winners.
