6-Mar-05: Wickham Wanderers vs. Hatch Warren

Wickham 4 - 1 Hatch Warren (Karl 2, Josh, Own Goal)
Wickham 3 - 0 Hatch Warren (Josh, Jordan B, William)

Sunday saw an away match to play Hatch Warren for the first time. Due to a shirt clash Wickham ended up reversing their shirts and playing in Pink, which the lads really loved!

Match 39

Hatch Warren kicked off with the initial play taking place in midfield. It was 3 minutes before Wickham got their first corner which sailed over the top of everyone to Aiden at the back but his touch just went wide of the post. Hatch Warren then went on the attack but Ben made a fine save. He hit the ball downfield to Jordan on the right who went down the wing before pulling the ball back for Karl. He neatly went around the keeper to score. Right on half time a Hatch Warren break down the left drew the Wickham defence across. With three players unmarked in the middle it was easy for the chance to be converted so the half time score was 1-1.

Ian asked the lads to be more careful in defence and to pass the ball around a little quicker. Wickham were put under a little bit of pressure at the start of the half but a defensive throw in the Wickham corner saw Karl feed Neil down the right. He won another throw in which Aiden then battled well to win before knocking it across the area for Josh to bang in for 2-1. Midway through the half a Wickham sort corner seemed to have been cleared but William won the ball back and past it to Jordan. His drive seemed to be going wide before it took a wicked deflection off a defender and sailed into the net for an own goal. Right at the end of the half a William shot was handled on the line. The resulting penalty (from 10 yards out!) was struck directly at the keeper but Karl was first to the ball to hit the rebound in for a 4-1 victory.

Match 40

Hatch Warren kicked off but immediately gave Wickham a throw in. This was taken quickly to Jordan who raced between the two defenders and round the goal keeper to score. Wickham continued to press forwards and all three subs were used but they failed to take any of the chances available until right at then end of the half Josh was brought down on the halfway line. Ben came up to take the kick hitting directly to Josh who turned and drove the ball into the back of the net with his right foot for a half time score of 2-0.

The second half was one-way traffic with Ben taking free kicks outside his area after Josh, Karl and William had all taken heavy knocks with Josh at one stage having to come off with a stud hole in the back of his sock. Wickham just could not force the ball into the back of the net until finally, in the 12th minute, a real goal mouth scrabble saw Neil, Josh and William all challenging for the ball. Eventually an attempted clearance saw the ball driven against William and as it dropped he hit it with his left foot just inside the right hand, post giving Wickham a 3-0 victory.

Two people received the majority of the votes for the Player of the Day award and then could not be split so it was shared between Jack and Josh.
